Cosmetic Shell

Dublin, Ireland

Description:

A cosmetic shell is a thin ocular prosthesis that is worn over a blind phthisical (shrunken) eye due to a trauma, a congenital condition or surgery. A cosmetic shell helps to restore volume and natural appearance.

I understand the psychological and social benefit of a cosmetic shell as much as a prosthetic eye and the importance of a greater sense of self-esteem and overall well-being. This is the basis of my motivation for becoming an Ocularist.

The process includes taking an impression of the front of the shrunken eye that will maximise the comfort of the prosthesis. If this is your first time getting a cosmetic shell a trial with a clear shell will be done as a first stage for you to try it.

Then the necessary volume will be added and the centration of the pupil to prepare it for the painting staining and veining.

This process is done in four appointments.
